Dutch Oven Apple Crisp is comfort food at its best! Warm, cinnamon apples coated with crunchy sweet oat topping! Making this in the Dutch Oven just melts those apples into a puddle of yum!

What You Will ❤️ About Dutch Oven Apple Crisp
- Appl-icious! I used three big green apples but you could easily use more! They cook down and are just so comforting!
- Easy to Make! This dish is easy to whip up! Slice all those apples – mix the topping and into the oven!
- Classic Recipe – sometimes those classic “grandma” recipes are still the best – it’s not fancy – but it’s delicious.

Apple Crisp Ingredients
This is a great recipe year round – but feel free to use it during apple picking season! Nothing better than fresh apples you pick yourself! Here’s what you’ll need:
- Granny Smith Apples – I’ve never been a green apple fan but they’re so great in desserts! You could also use Fuji, Honeycrisp or Golden Delicious! I do NOT like the texture of peel on fruit – so I peel them first.
- Granulated Sugar & Brown Sugar – I like using both types of sugar for added richness in flavor
- Flour – all purpose flour is all you need to help bind it all togther
- Cinnamon – an essential spice – I like to use Saigon Cinnamon as it has a stronger flavor than regular ground cinnamon. You could also add in a touch of nutmeg if you like.
- Old Fashioned Oats – I just use the good ol’ canister of oats for this
- Cold Butter – salted or unsalted – I think a little salt is good

Recipe Variations
- Lots of Fruits – you don’t have to just use apples – you can use peaches, berries, plums, rhubarb or even cherries! Frozen or fresh! It’s a very basic dish – and you just swap out the fruit you want!
- Apple Crumble – don’t have oats? Make the same topping without them and it’s now a crumble!
- Air Fryer – you could also make this in your air fryer – now not in a Dutch Oven! But you could make a smaller amount in a baking dish or cake pan that fits in your air fryer! Cut the cooking time down by 25%.
- Nuts – you could add chopped walnuts or pecans to your crisp topping if you like!

How to make Apple Crisp in your Dutch Oven
Apple Crisp is such a simple recipe – and I’m gonna tell ya – get your hands in the topping! It’s much easier than trying to use a fork or pastry cutter! Here’s how to make it:
- Preheat oven to 350º and spray cast iron Dutch oven with non-stick cooking spray
- Clean, peel, and slice apples and place in a large bowl.
- Add in granulated sugar, cinnamon and 1 tbsp flour. Toss and make sure all apples are coated.
- Pour apple mixture into Dutch oven and give an extra sprinkle of cinnamon over the apples.
- In a small bowl, mix oats, brown sugar and flour. Stir to combine.
- Dice cold butter in and add to small bowl. Use hands to mix butter into flour mixture until crumbly. Use your fingers to mush the butter into the mix. It will take 2-3 minutes.
- Sprinkle topping over apples in an even layer.
- Place in preheated oven and bake for 30-40 min
- Check the crisp at 30 min – if you see any dry floury spots – lay a thin slice of butter on top of spots and bake 10 more minutes.
- Spoon into bowls and serve with vanilla ice cream!

Tips, Tricks & FAQs
Store leftovers in an airtight container (I like these glass ones) in the refrigerator for up to a week. You can freeze up to three months. Reheat in the microwave for 1-2 minutes or in the air fryer for 4-5 minutes.
They’re typically made out of enameled cast iron which means they hold heat very well. It’s like you’re baking it even hotter than the oven temp!
Yes – the apples cook down a lot so you could definitely use a deep cast iron skillet.
