Hasselback Apples are a dessert that is not only easy – but delicious!!!! It turns out to be sort of like a crustless apple pie – all the goodness of the filling with no crust! I can’t say the recipe is light by any means – but it’s really not too bad! There’s a little butter and a little sugar – but that’s about it.

What You Will ❤️ About Hasselback Apples

Now I might have added a little ice cream to the top and some jarred Praline sauce from my trip to New Orleans – but it’s delicious all on its own! Here are more things to love:

  • Fast – it only take about 10 minutes to prepare it – and then you just pop it in the oven and let that do the rest of the work!
  • Individual Dessert – it’s kinda fun for dinner or a party for everybody to have their own dessert!
  • Crumble Topping – the delicious crumble topping is my favorite part of this baked apple!

Ingredients for Hasselback Apples

This recipe is super simple – you just need apples, cinnamon, sugar, butter and oats. Once that’s together – you can top it with chopped pecans, whipped topping, vanilla ice cream or a sauce like Caramel or Praline for a little extra gooey goodness!

  • Apples – good apple varieties for this are Braeburn, Cortland, Pink Lady, Honey Crisp, Jonathan, Fuji, Gala or Granny Smith – you want a firm apple that is sweet & tart!
  • Melted butter – you can use salted or unsalted butter – I like the touch of salt for this
  • Sugar – I used white sugar but you could use light brown sugar
  • Cinnamon – I like Saigon Cinnamon – it has a little stronger flavor!
  • Old-fashioned rolled oats – just don’t use the instant oats – you want the texture and the crunch

How to make Hasselback Apples

The idea of a “hasselback” recipe – you peel, core and halve the fruit (apples, potatoes. etc). Then you make diagonal slices part-way through but making sure it still stays together in one piece. This allows for the the toppings/fillings to seep into the slices. Here’s how to make them:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 and line a baking sheet or baking dish with parchment paper or aluminum foil
  2. Peel the apples and slice in half vertically. Core the apples.
  3. Place each apple half cut-side down and use a paring knife to create thin slices along the arch of the apple. Do not slice all the way through – just shallow slices that will create small spaces for the sugar mixture to seep into
  4. Place apples to baking sheet
  5. Melt butter and brush apple with a little bit of the butter and sprinkle with sugar – then repeat with remaining apple halves
  6. Bake until apples are soft and carmelized, 30 minutes
  7. Remove from oven. In a small bowl, combine remaining melted butter, sugar, cinnamon and oats.
  8. Smother apples with 1/4 of the sugar/oat mixture
  9. Return to oven and bake 15 minutes more
  10. Remove from oven and top each with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and – if you have it or something similar – drizzle a few tablespoons of Caramel sauce and serve!
