What You Will ❤️ About Smoked Cheesy Potatoes

I took the pan of smoked cheesy potatoes to watch a football game with friends and it was GONE before the game was over! Side dishes on the Traeger are so great because you can cook your main dish (pork loin, turkey, chicken thighs) and still have room on the smoker – so use the space and smoke a casserole!

How to Make Cheesy Potatoes on the Traeger

Adding the smoky deliciousness from the Traeger is super easy with casseroles like this Cheesy Potato Casserole. Just make your casserole and then pop it on the Traeger instead of in the oven!

  • Preheat Traeger to 250ºF. Lightly spray a 9×13-inch disposable foil pan with non-stick cooking spray
  • In a large bowl, combine frozen hash browns, diced onion, cheddar cheese, pepper jack cheese, sour cream and cream of mushroom soup. Spread potato mixture into the prepared pan.
  • Crush crackers and sprinkle on top of the potatoes and pour melted butter over the top.
  • Place pan uncovered on grill grates. Smoke for 90 minutes at 250º or until golden crisp and bubbly.

Tips, Tricks & FAQs

How do you smoke cheesy potatoes?

Make the casserole and pop it on the Traeger/smoker! Smoke at 225-250º for 90 minutes.

How long does it take to smoke potatoes at 400?

I hate to break it to you – you’re not really smoking them if your Traeger grill is at 400º. For smoking – you need a lower temp (225-250º) for a longer period of time. This low and slow method is how the smoke from the pellets really gets the smoke flavor into your dish!

What kind of pellets should I use to smoke cheesy potatoes?

There are many flavors of pellets that work in your Traeger pellet grill. I keep it simple and always use the Traeger Signature Blend which is a blend of Maple and Cherry. That said if you’re looking for something specific for side dishes – I like to use mild flavors like Pecan, Apple and Cherry.

What pairs well with cheesy potatoes?

My favorite side to pair with cheesy potatoes are smoked green beans with bacon! If you’re looking for a main dish – they go great with my Traeger Pork Loin!

Are cheesy potatoes healthy?

Heck no! Cheesy potatoes (also known as funeral potatoes) are full of cheese, sour cream, cream of mushroom soup, nope.

How do you store and reheat leftover cheesy potatoes?

Store leftovers in an airtight container and refrigerate up to a week – or freeze up to three months. If you’re reheating a large batch, put in the oven at 350º for 20 minutes (this will crunch up the crackers too). You can also reheat (on a plate) in the air fryer for 4-5 minutes. Or the easiest and quickest way is to reheat in the microwave for 1-2 minutes – depending on the quantity.

Cheesy Potato Variations

  • Canned Soup – you can vary the soup if you’re not a fan of mushrooms and use cream of chicken or cream of celery soup
  • No Canned Soup – if you want to ditch the soup, double up the sour cream.
  • Veggiesfeel free to add more veggies – I think diced green peppers would be great.
  • Meat – Want to make it a meal? Add diced ham, smoked sausage slices, shredded chicken or shredded pork before you put on the smoker and it’ll be a whole meal!
  • Topping – Now I’m a firm believer in crushed Ritz crackers – but many folks like to use potato chips or crushed corn flakes. Blasphemy in my house – but do what you like! ๐Ÿ˜‰
