How to Serve Sweet Potatoes

I like my sweet potatoes with butter and brown sugar – but you can serve them many different ways. Here’s a few:

  • Sweet Butter – make up some of my famous Texas Roadhouse Cinnamon Butter and top the sweet potato! Go crazy and add a drizzle of maple syrup to the butter mixture.
  • Chili – living in Cinci, I’m used to chili with cinnamon and a little sweet – so topping a sweet potato with chili is a natural! And add a dollop of sour cream and a sprinkle of cheese and chives for even more yum!
  • Sliced & Fried – Slice the sweet potato into THICK slices and fry them up! Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside!
  • Chicken & Avocado – make a healthy loaded baked potato with shredded chicken, black beans, diced tomatoes and avocado

How to make Smoked Sweet Potatoes on your Traeger grill

Making potatoes is super easy – it’s actually great to throw on when you’re making a protein like ribs or pork chops! Two birds – one stone!

  1. Preheat your smoker to 250ºF with the lid closed.
  2. Wash and dry the sweet potatoes to scrub off any dirt. Use a fork to poke holes around the potatoes. Place potatoes in a large bowl and drizzle with olive oil and season all over with salt and pepper.
  3. Place the sweet potatoes directly on the grill grates. Cook for 2.5 hours until the potatoes are fork tender. You can also test with an instant read thermometer and check for an internal temperature of 205ºF at their thickest point.
  4. Remove from smoker. Tent with foil and rest briefly before serving with butter & brown sugar.

Tips, Tricks & FAQs

How do you store and reheat leftover sweet potatoes?

Store leftovers in an airtight container (I like these glass ones) in the refrigerator for up to a week. Reheat in the microwave for 1 minute.

What kind of pellets should I use to smoke sweet potatoes?

There are many flavors of pellets that work in your Traeger pellet grill. I keep it simple and always use the Traeger Signature Blend which is a blend of Maple and Cherry. That said if you’re looking for something specific for sweet potatoes – I would go with something strong like Hickory, Mesquite & Pecan or something sweet like Apple.

Should I wrap potatoes in foil?

You can wrap them in aluminum foil before placing on the Traeger but I think it blocks the smoky flavor so I don’t.
